Smart home technology, made simple

Doorbells, thermostats, speakers and lighting should make life easier, not add three more apps and two more logins. I set these systems up properly and untangle the ones that have grown complicated.

Setup and fault-finding

Whether it is a Ring doorbell, a Nest thermostat, Sonos speakers or Philips Hue lighting, I can install these devices, connect them reliably to your network, and sort out the ones that keep dropping off or behaving inconsistently. A lot of smart home trouble is really a WiFi coverage problem underneath.

Simplifying what you already have

In most homes there is a way to reduce the number of apps and accounts involved, bring devices from different brands under one roof, and set up a few routines that do the useful things automatically. The aim is a system the whole household can actually use, not just the person who set it up.

Security

Every internet-connected device added to a home is also a potential route in for someone with bad intentions. As part of any smart home work I put these devices on their own network, separated from your computers and phones, and check that each one is up to date. See Network Security for the wider picture.

My devices keep going offline — is that fixable?
Usually yes. It is often a WiFi coverage or interference issue, which a short survey will confirm, followed by an access point in the right place.
Can you work with devices from different brands?
In most cases, yes. Many can be brought together, and where two systems genuinely will not talk to each other I will tell you before you spend anything.
Will you show us how to use it?
Yes. A handover at the end is part of the job, and I am happy to answer questions afterwards.
