When it makes sense

Where there is no fibre and the available broadband is not fast or reliable enough, a low-earth-orbit satellite service such as Starlink can provide a strong connection. Starlink offers download speeds of up to around 400 Mbps in most areas — more than enough for video calls, streaming and running a business from home. Amazon's competing service, Amazon Leo, is expected to follow.

Backup and failover

If your property or business needs a reliable connection, satellite can be configured as a standby line. It sits idle while your main connection is working and takes over automatically within seconds if that connection drops, then hands back when it recovers. For anyone who works from home or takes bookings and payments online, this removes the risk of a full-day outage.

Do I need a clear view of the sky?

Yes. The dish needs an unobstructed view to work reliably. I check this as part of the visit and will find the best mounting position.

Can it run my whole house, including WiFi and phones?

Yes. It connects into your network like any other broadband service, so existing equipment continues to work.

Is failover worth it for a home?

If you work from home or rely on the connection for care or security systems, it usually is. I can talk through the cost against the disruption of an outage.
